Emmdale Roadhouse

Image
The road from Broken Hill was littered with dead kangaroos. On one occasion we were unable to avoid a carcass as a semi trailer was coming from the other direction. No damage other than blood spatter. We pulled into the Emmdale Roadhouse for a cup of tea and lunch. Tea was served in a teapot by a British backpacker who has only been in Australia for a month and loves the outback (with the compensation of wifi to keep up with their friends and family back home). There was a good selection of teas and fresh milk instead of long-life.  Our animal spotting includes emus and their chicks, kangaroos and wallabies, goats, sheep, cattle and snakes.

Nyngan

We are staying the night at Nyngan beside the Macquarie River. The kiosk has an interesting collection of antiques and old horse drawn carts are protected in a shed. The camp kitchen by the river is partly moveable on an old truck. The "decking" is made from steel beams, presumably to cope with floods. There is a camel on the property, a couple of goats, and a dwarf Shetland pony that is either fat or pregnant.

Broken Hill

Image
When we arrived at Broken Hill I noticed the TV aerial on the Bushtracker was at an odd angle. My reliable brother-in-law came with ute, ladder and gaffer tape to make a temporary repair. My sister rescued a young goat which now thinks it is a dog! They all get along well. There are other goats on their block in lieu of mowing. We had dinner together at the Royal Exchange Hotel which is one of the well preserved buildings in Broken Hill. Tomorrow we resume our trip home.

Last Day

We drove to Coffin Bay which is a major oyster growing area and has a large national park. We had fish for lunch at a cafe which was next to a house where a mob of about 15 to 20 young emus were grazing.  Back at the campground we walked to the pier. I was minding some fishing rods for one of the Roadies while she went to get a jacket because of the cold wind. We caught a few tiddlers and tossed them back. There was much activity by the Aussie Road Crew "women's auxillary" making salads and dumplings. Sara Storer made rissoles for the BBQ. We spent the evening exchanging contact details with many of our new friends.  This morning we were on the road just after 6.30 am. There was very little traffic all the way to Peterborough where we have stopped for the night.
