Stuarts Point
The Macleay River used to flow into the ocean near Grassy Head to the north of Stuarts Point. In 1893 a large flood caused a new river opening at South West Rocks. This was developed for the local shipping trade of the era and the original river mouth has silted over. Four wheel drive tracks allow access to the beach, but there's no way the Jeep will be driven on salty sand!
This timber bridge crosses the river arm and connects to a walking track through the dunes to the unpatrolled beach. This is a fishing haven where people can fish in the river or along the beach. There are kayaks for hire but the scenery from the river arm would not be worth the effort of paddling in the fast flowing water.
The beach is an off leash playground for dogs. This fella was duck diving in the river trying to catch fish.
