Hadrian's Wall
Having seen most of Dumfries yesterday, we decided to drive to Carlisle. The rain started in earnest while we were in the covered Lanes shopping centre buying extra suitcases for all of our outdoor clothing purchases. The suitcases we wanted were priced at £55, but the chatty shop assistant said we could have the pink ones for £39 as she was over stocked with that colour.
I wanted to see Hadrian's Wall so we drove to Gilsland where the carpark was less than 100m from the wall. This was important because we had relied on the weather forecast predicting a rain free day and had not taken any of the said outdoor clothing!
Hadrian's Wall was built in about 14 years starting in 122AD. The Romans wanted to keep the marauding Scots out of the land they had seized, so built this 4m high wall from one side of England to the other side, about 73 miles long. There is a walking path all the way along the wall.
We had lunch at the Howard Arms in Brampton. We ordered pasta with pesto and olives and a serve of roast pork, but were served pasta without either pesto or olives, and a roast pork chop rather than the roast pork we expected. There was a delay of nearly one hour due to some mixup in the kitchen, so we were given a 10% discount on our bill. The meals very very ordinary!
