Roman Baths

The rain eased off so we walked to the Avon River and around Bath. The queue for the Roman Baths was very long on Saturday, but was managable this morning so we joined it. The entry fee was £14.50 for seniors so that's a lot of money taken every day of the year.

The Romans invaded Britain in 43AD and had built the baths by AD75 in order to enjoy the hot mineral water that rises from an underground spring. They withdrew to Rome about 410AD and the baths fell into ruin. In 600AD Bath was conquered by the Saxons and the baths were swallowed by a swamp. It would have been a very warm swamp! Apparently those invading northern Europeans weren't too keen on bathing. The baths were not rediscovered until the late 1700s when workers were digging to lay a sewer line. The photo shows the top of Bath Abbey in the background.
