Gatwick to Bath

Fortunately the rain held off until we reached Bath. We were not relishing the thought of driving at 70mph on the motorway in the rain in an unfamiliar car.

Hertz sent us an email showing our allocated car as a brown Kia station wagon with dents and scrapes both sides. We headed to the airport early and explained we had booked a Volvo or equivalent. The service manager quickly found us a silver Volvo with less than 2000 miles on the clock.

The drive was mostly uninteresting motorway until we reached the outskirts of Bath. The city comprises hundreds of historic sandstone buildings, including the Grays Boutique B & B where we are staying. I ventured out in the rain for a walk while Anita stayed dry.

The rain eased and we found a reasonable Italian pizzeria within walking distance. Using the car around here is impractical given the number of visitors, narrow roads and shortage of car parks.
