Enniskillen
Enniskillen is a town in Northern Ireland built on an island in the River Erne. It has the remains of a castle and a large Methodist church. The town dates back to the 1600s and has a lot of Georgian architecture.
It is unfortunately known as the site of a Provisional IRA bombing at the Cenataph on Rememberance Day 1987, when 11 people were killed and dozens injured. The IRA later admitted they had made a mistake as their target was British soldiers in the parade.
We are staying at the Enniskillen Hotel which has parking, friendly and helpful staff, and is well appointed. We decided to eat at Beckett's the hotel restaurant, named after Samuel Beckett who went to school at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen - Oscar Wilde also attended that school 50 years earlier.
The restaurant only opens 2 nights per week serving a degustation menu. The food was interesting and tasty. There was entertainment when the lavender sorbet was in a falling cloud created by water being poured onto dry ice. The petit fours wete served in Bushmills whiskey box - the hotel has a dedicated whiskey bar.
