City of Wells

We drove from Bath to Wells, the smallest city in England. This location was chosen so we would have the most scenic approach to Cheddar Gorge, but we explored the magnificent cathedral and Bishop's Palace. For 800 years the Anglican Bishop of Bath and Wells has called this collection of medieval buildings home. Parts of the palace date back to the 13th century.

The western side of the cathedral has dozens of lifesize statues which have been cleaned and restored. On the north side there is a 14th century mechanical astronomical clock with a face inside and outside which is shown in the picture. The seat tapestries in the cathedral are in excellent condition with bright colourings.

Luckily the ominous cloud hovering over Wells resulted in a shower after we had returned to our car.
